Satoshi
A satoshi is the smallest unit of bitcoin, one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC).
The smallest unit of bitcoin: one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC). Named after Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. People often say sats.
How many satoshis are in a bitcoin?
100,000,000. So 0.001 BTC is 100,000 sats, and the 21 million bitcoin that will ever exist come to about 2.1 quadrillion satoshis. Bitcoin itself only counts satoshis: BTC is how people write a hundred million of them.
Why count in satoshis?
Fees and small payments read more easily: "a fee of 280 sats" rather than "0.0000028 BTC". Fee rates are always written in satoshis per virtual byte.
